Abstract: In this study an attempt was taken to evaluate the performance of bamboo (Bambusa balcooa) and rattan (Daemonorops jenkinsiana) as reinforcement in both two-way and one-way concrete slabs. To compare the test results concrete slabs without reinforcement and with steel reinforcement were also studied. It was seen from the study that though not like steel reinforced slabs yet both bamboo and rattan reinforced slabs showed better performance than the non-reinforced cases. Also higher load taking ability was shown by bamboo reinforced slabs than the rattan reinforced slabs.

Keywords: bamboo reinforcement; one-way slabs; rattan reinforcement; two-way slabs; biomaterials; steel reinforcement; concrete slabs; reinforced concrete; loading.
