Abstract: The TiC micro and nanoparticles were successfully synthesised via immersing Ti3AlC2 powders in hydrofluoric acid assisted solvothermal reaction method. The as synthesised products are characterised by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicated the TiC compounds had micro and nano structures with the size range of 0.1 to 1 µm. The tribological properties of TiC micro and nanoparticles as additives in 100 SN base oil were investigated by UMT-2 ball-on-disc tribotester. The wear scars were measured by a common optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy. The study shows that under the determinate conditions, the friction coefficient of the base oil containing 1 wt% TiC micro and nanoparticles is lower than that of the pure base oil. A combination of rolling friction, and stable tribofilm on the rubbing surface could explain the good friction and wear properties of TiC micro and nanoparticles as additives.
