Abstract: This paper discusses the results on the use of Jatropha methyl ester (JME) - Wood pyrolysis oil (WPO) emulsion as an alternative fuel in a compression ignition (CI) engine. Three different emulsions were prepared by adding WPO in 5%, 10% and 15% by volume with JME 95%, 90% and 85% by volume respectively using a surfactant Span 20 at 4% on volume basis. The engine behaviour in terms of the combustion performance and emission parameters of the engine were evaluated, analysed, compared with diesel and JME operations in the same engine. Results indicated that the combustion of JME-WPO emulsions started earlier than that of diesel, but little later than that of JME. The percentage decrease in the smoke opacity of 21.4%, 19.6%, 17.1% and 15% are recorded for the JME, X2JOE5, X2JOE10 and X2JOE15 respectively in comparison with diesel at full load.
