Abstract: The question of whether the world is experiencing an energy crisis is addressed with reference to alternative renewable sources of energy. The substitution of renewable for non-renewable sources must play a decisive role in the solution of both national and international energy problems. Renewable energy also offers a solution to the problem of the |greenhouse| effect, by reducing carbon dioxide production from conventional energy industries. This article examines these potential energy resources in order to evaluate their prospects.

Keywords: energy alternatives; energy economics; future prospects; greenhouse effect; renewable energy; carbon dioxide; carbon emissions; CO2.
