Title: Sustainable energy development: The case of Denmark

Abstract: The IPCC report of 1990 concluded that in order to stabilize the global climate it will be necessary to reduce CO2 (and other greenhouse gas) emissions by at least 60 per cent compared to the 1990 level. This paper reviews the energy situation in Denmark. The likely development of Denmark|s energy demand is outlined, and the prospects for a sustainable energy supply system are considered. The Danish analysis has shown that nuclear power is not needed if the energy strategy is based on a combination of efficiency, renewables and a saturation of material growth in the industrial countries. In the case of Denmark it will be possible to rely on safe and environmentally benign energy sources.
