Abstract: An optimal capacity planning problem is discussed for energy supply systems including thermal storage tanks. Equipment capacities and utility maximum demands are determined so as to minimize the annual total cost in consideration of the system|s operational strategy for energy demand varying hourly in a year. This optimization problem is solved using a hierarchical optimization method on the basis of a penalty one. The operational strategy for hourly energy demand is determined so as to minimize the daily operational cost. This optimal operational problem is solved efficiently from the viewpoint of computation time by a proposed approximate method. Lastly, a numerical study is carried out for three types of district heating and cooling systems to be compared. Through the study, the effectiveness of the proposed method is ascertained.
