Abstract: The accelerated development of wind energy in India over the past three years has evoked widespread international attention. In order to ensure proper and orderly growth of the Indian wind power programme, the Government of India issued the guidelines for wind power projects in 1995, which were subsequently revised in June 1996. These guidelines are to be followed by utilities, nodal agencies, manufacturers, developers, financiers and users. The guidelines have received mixed reactions. The paper examines the various national standards and procedures existing in the leading European countries and specifically the Germany, Denmark and Netherlands. It then examines against this backdrop the Indian guidelines and some of the expected benefits as well as the concerns it raises.
