Abstract: A recent literature review shows that most 2D and 3D CAD packages do not provide options that can perform quick volume estimations of CAD objects. Thus, problems can arise when one attempts to compute a quick and rough estimation of the amount of material usage and cost. QVOLEST, a PC-based software package built on parametric primitives, has been developed as an answer to these problems. It is found that when dealing with simple 2D CAD objects, the quick estimated volumes compare favourably with the actual ones, while for computing of complex shapes, the percentage error remains marginal (±5%).
