Abstract: One of the most important steps in designing manufacturing facilities is developing an effective machine layout. In contrast to the block layout, machine layout is a detailed layout problem which requires diverse and accurate data. Preparing detailed data for analytical models and expert systems that develop the machine layout could become an extremely difficult task particularly for new facilities which implement modern manufacturing concepts and technologies. However, it may be possible to alleviate the difficulties associated with data preparation and develop effective layouts, if the data issue is addressed at the early stages of studying the layout problem, and data requirements are accounted for during modelling the problem. This paper examines some of the difficulties encountered in preparing machine layout data and suggests several guidelines which are akin to modelling in order to overcome the difficulties associated with data preparation.
