Abstract: This is an edited version of a keynote address given by the author to the Society of Automotive Engineers on February 24, 1992, in the home of the US car industry - Detroit. In an upbeat address, he identifies a number of changes in US industry over the past decade: improved output, teamwork, overhaul of management structures and reduced labour costs have all led to a marked expansion of US exports. This contrasts strongly with the pessimistic view of the US currently projected by the media and reflected in the political arena. After reviewing America|s achievements over the past 50 years, he concludes his address on an optimistic note for the future of US industry.
