Title: Computer-assisted learning for dealership and employee training in the automotive industry

Abstract: This article is concerned with the introduction and development of computer-assisted learning programmes by Jaguar Cars Ltd into their dealership and employee training schemes. The information presented covers the general use of innovative techniques, such as interactive video disc, with applications to both distance learning for the dealer network and local in-house training for employees. Fundamental concepts of employee self-centred instruction and the application of computer-assisted learning in the automotive industry are discussed. Details are included of the pilot scheme for the introduction of interactive video technology. Comments on the reaction of the dealership network to the new technology are given, along with initial evaluation of employees| response to the use of open and distance learning. Overall, the selling up of the dealer training facility to launch a new vehicle and the multi-site Open Learning Centres operating in the West Midlands are shown to be powerful links for information transfer in the automotive industry.
