Abstract: The application of these many areas of development in new technology to vehicles means that the driver of a modern vehicle can now be informed about the state of the vehicle and its components, about traffic conditions, and about the environment in which the vehicle is being used, and can receive information unrelated to the vehicle but of relevance to the driver. Moreover, other users of the vehicle can receive information about the condition of the vehicle and other relevant information. The main question, addressed here, the ergonomist is concerned with is how best to provide information to the user in a form which takes account of his/her requirements and capabilities.

Keywords: ergonomics; evaluation; human factors; in-vehicle information systems; vehicle design; vehicle safety.
