Title: High speed direct injection diesel engines

Authors: I. MacPherson

Addresses: Chief Engine Engineer, Truck Operations, Ford of Europe, Germany

Abstract: The basic sciences in diesel engine combustion are considered; direct and indirect diesel engine injection systems are described; and recent developments in the application of high speed engines to light vehicles are reviewed. The latter are discussed with respect to Ford|s development aims of confirming the capability of a high speed direct injection system to achieve satisfactory power, engine speed, economy and emissions control; of developing the necessary high pressure fuel injection pumps; and demonstrating a feasible engine that can be mass produced.

Keywords: vehicle design; diesel engine development; high speed direct injection systems; direct diesel engine injection systems; indirect diesel engine injection systems; economy; emissions control; diesel engine combustion.
