Title: The problem of decreasing traffic noise

Abstract: This study looks at vehicle noise in terms of two categories into which vehicle components fall: parts which act as a medium of propagation of vibratory energy simultaneously with acting as an emitter of acoustic energy; and parts which emit no acoustic energy as such but transmit it to structural elements which do. An equation is derived for determining acoustic balance in a vehicle and examples are given of its use. It is indicated how vibroinsulating and vibroabsorbing devices will in future be used to |silence| large body panels and the car body itself, and a comparison is made of different engine types. Consideration is given to models of traffic noise levels at different times of the day or night, effects of more or less heavy vehicles in the traffic flaw, effects at controlled compared to uncontrolled intersections and city roads compared to out-of-city roads.
