Abstract: Current military aeroengine technology presents both technical and commercial challenges as manufacturers work to reconcile performance and configuration needs. The present and future requirements of advanced fighters, transport and training planes, helicopters and vertical and short-take-off-and-landing (V/STOL) aircraft are considered with reference to the role of Rolls-Royce in establishing the technological foundation for development. The demand for economic means of launching spacecraft and the military potential of transatmospheric vehicles have led to an intensification of studies into air-breathing propulsion as a supplement to, or substitution for, rocket motors. The size of the potential European market for this kind of high-speed propulsion provides the background to work now being done in this wide-open field.
