Abstract: This paper reviews the fundamental criteria which affect the performance and design of railway vehicles. Various problems associated with the dynamic behaviour of trains and vehicles are discussed with regard to the design of the suspension and structural systems. A brief description of track characterisation, used in evaluating a vehicle|s behaviour, is also given.

Keywords: railway vehicle design; performance criteria; dynamic behaviour; suspension design; structural system design; passenger comfort; safety; railways.
