Title: Trip generation and modal choice among commuters of road and water transport in Nigerian coastal communities

Abstract: This study analysed trip-making behaviour in the riverine communities of Ondo State, Nigeria. The number and purposes of trips made for one week and factors influencing commuters' mode choice were examined. 240 household heads, proportionally-selected from 13 communities were sampled. Results showed that 2,337 trips were generated per week, with 1,638 trips by water transport and 699 by road, translating to average weekly trip rate of 6.8 and 2.9 by water and road respectively for different purposes. Also, 228 respondents, representing 95.0% were males, only a statistically-insignificant 5.0% were females. Fishing occupation has the highest frequency, 112 (46.7%). Those whose incomes were over 450,000 naira per annum were more (30.4%) than those in other income brackets, and 6.7% of the respondents still have no access to road transport. Government should set up a Coastal Transportation Development Commission to regulate and coordinate water and road transport system in the study area.
