Abstract: Urbanisation and globalisation have been constantly creating challenges before the food packaging industry. Increased packaging technology raises the issues related to environment management. Given the importance of the issues involved, it surely must be presented upon us to properly examine whether the demonisation of food packaging is justified. This research aims at stressing the need for subsequently adapting a more holistic approach when studying and analysing the environment management system, so that a comprehensive study of factors that constitutes successful EMS adoption can be achieved. A study of the Indian food packaging industry has been done in order to prove the appropriateness and importance of the proposed approach in the context of EMS implementation. The research paper is a part of the thesis prepared in order to propose a theoretical EMS framework and to define critical success factors, based on an exploratory qualitative study in order to find out and compare the performance indicators used by Indian food packaging industry which is competing with similar frameworks for doing business in the globalised business world. Analysis and synthesis of plethora of literature has resulted in identifying 11 variables crucial to develop a framework for EMS implementation.
