Abstract: The monodisperse colloidal NdF3 nanorods were synthesised via one-step thermolysis of Nd(CF3COO)3 3H2O in a hot trioctylphosphine oxide solution. The resulting product was characterised by Fourier transform infrared analysis, transmission electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The rod-like nanocrystals possess well shaped fenestral structures. Optical spectra exhibited the colloidal NdF3 nanoparticles possessing typical Nd3+ ion absorption and photoluminescence mission. The emission cross-section of 4F3/24I11/2 fluorescence transition was 2.12 × 10-20 cm2, and comparable with some laser glasses.
