Title: The antibacterial efficacy of pine oils on pathogens commonly found in biosolids applied to pine plantations

Abstract: This study investigated the antibacterial activity of oils from the needles of Pinus radiata, Pinus pinaster, Pinus nigra and Pinus sylvestris against strains of Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and Clostridium perfringens present in biosolids. The results showed that pine oil from fresh needles of P. radiata and P. pinaster trees have antibacterial properties against biosolids strains of E. coli and Salmonella spp. No potential antibacterial activity against C. perfringens was observed. Commercially produced pine oils, P.nigra and P. sylvestris oil had similar antibacterial actions to P. radiata and P. pinaster oil for E. coli.
