Title: Monitoring the Bavarian nuclear power plants online applying a Lagrangian model

Abstract: In 1997, the Monitoring System for Nuclear Power Plants (KFÜ) - located in the Bavarian office of environmental protection - was upgraded. The change included replacing the Gaussian plume model by a numerical dispersion model based on the Lagrangian theory. The KFÜ system allows the assessment of the doses workers receive in routine and emergency operation. Improvements of the new monitoring system comprise taking into account complex terrain at different resolutions, wind field measurements at the sites, off-site wind measurements and the dispersion computations in a non-equidistant numerical grid. WWW software enhances communication and allows clients to follow up the online computations or start prognoses on their own. Future options will incorporate information on the mixing height at stable meteorological conditions and precipitation data from about 25 sites around each plant.
