Abstract: Nowadays, smartphones are gaining popularity due to cutting edge technology added on top of wearability. Unfortunately, offering such performance does not come cheap: the energy requirements of mobile phones tend to stretch beyond the extents of modern battery technology, which, ironically, is reaching the theoretical physical limit. At this crossroads, mobile device manufacturers and software engineers alike, have to take energy efficiency into consideration. Most research in this sense has mostly been oriented at tweaking and restricting resource utilisation. However, recent endeavours have been focusing on mobile cloud computing where all battery-sensitive computation is offloaded into clouds. We believe such endeavours will eventually prove insufficient, therefore we introduce a novel collaboration solution for mobile devices, namely HYCCUPS. The main idea behind the HYCCUPS framework is to take advantage of the pervasive nature of smartphones as to offer offloading the execution of mobile applications in an opportunistic hybrid computing cloud.
