Abstract: The use of metaphor is a valuable way to discuss an environmental issue. An interdisciplinary group of environmental experts participated in a Roundtable discussion on the metaphor |Who|s driving the bus on the road to sustainable development?| The metaphor provided a basis for reflection and meaningful dialog about where sustainable development is headed. The Roundtable discussion focused on four topic areas: Is there one bus, one destination, or many? (Getting the metaphor straight); Where does the road lead? (What is sustainable development? What should be sustained?); Who should be driving the bus? (Which institutions should take the lead on sustainable issues?); Can we get to our destination? (What is the likelihood that we will achieve sustainable development?)

Keywords: sustainable development; environmental sustainability.
