Abstract: This paper seeks to explore the use of educational technology in the South African context. The significance of information and communication technology (ICT) in higher education and its arising challenges are explored with special focus on social media as a component of enhanced teaching and learning. The article concludes with an exploration of the challenges and opportunities for the largest South African university: the University of South Africa (UNISA).
