Abstract: A short pulse generator based on a notch filter centred at the carrier frequency of a local oscillator is analysed. Two approaches are investigated to achieve adaptation to Federal Communication Commission (FCC) indoor frequency mask. In the first approach, the pulse spectrum respects the mask at high frequencies and a high-pass filter is used for adaptation at low-frequencies. A 3rd-order Butterworth filter is a good compromise between circuit complexity, adaptation to the mask and pulse duration. Duration of 350 ps at 5% is achievable. In the second approach, the pulse spectral width is greater than the frequency mask and a band-pass filter is used. Various filters are studied and a prototype is made with a 3rd-order Hourglass filter. This approach, less sensitive to practical limitations can be applied to any frequency mask as it is experimentally demonstrated for the mask imposed by the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI).
