Abstract: There are many reasons to weigh road vehicles and it is more efficient to weigh them in motion than when static. This was the reasoning behind the decision made by Captels, a French industrial weighing company, to develop a low-speed weigh-in-motion system called the TRN.30.LS.WIM. This paper describes the importance of weighing road vehicles and the low-speed weigh-in-motion technology. It shows the various phenomena, attributed to the weighing device and vehicle mechanical behaviour, that influence the measurements and the design. Finally it reviews some test studies.
Keywords: vehicle dynamic behaviour; vehicle weighing-in-motion; low speed WIM; weighing accuracy; weigh-in-motion.
