Abstract: In the Electric Power System (EPS) of Bulgaria the most widespread are the system stabilisers type PSS2A (421.5 IEEE Standard, 2005). Most of them were installed during the period of preparation for parallel operation with the European EPS. In general, tuning the stabilisers apply to setting its gain and phase-shifting block time constants. In this paper is proposed a methodology for calculation of optimal PSS2A settings. The methodology differs from the other well-known in that it also includes setting the input and torsional filters and that the optimality criterion is based on H-norm as a generalised assessment of the quality of transient processes in the whole EPS. It is also shown that the input filter settings can influence the damping of local and at most of low-frequency inter-area oscillations in EPS – a problem which became current after the start of the parallel operation. Results for single- and multi-machine systems are presented.
