Abstract: Mechanical aerators used in wastewater treatment are the largest energy consumers in biological reactors. Well-known researchers have been working on the oxygen transfer by mechanical aerators in oxidation ditch process and they have successfully enhanced the efficiency of aeration system with considering the factors affecting oxygen transfer such as speed of rotors and geometry of aeration basin. In this paper, attempts are made to review the performance of aeration system in wastewater treatment with special reference to oxidation ditch, reported by various workers globally and to conclude for the best and effective performance.
