Abstract: The technical issues of the internet are dismissed as being irrelevant in the measure of the long-term impact of the internet on academe. The internet and other virtual delivery technologies are just tools encouraging a trend which has a 500 year evolutionary history. The velocity of this change, due to the internet, raises the activity to our consciousness. The transformation within this cultural context provides the knowledge and understanding in an increasingly information driven society.

Keywords: impact of the internet; interchangeability of courses; future of academe.
