Abstract: Damage analysis is an important source for so-far unknown facts and connections. It can fulfill its tasks only if during organization and selection of people all necessary requirements are observed. No-one may be employed if he would be forced to disclose his own faults or omissions. All related information must be presented, from the demands for construction up to the load distribution and conditions of use. People in charge of damage analysis must have the same personal qualifications as those in charge of construction of the same machine. Procedures for damage analysis must be prepared in advance. A reproducing-test has to prove the same damaging effect under the same load and with similar conditions of use. Damage analysis has to include proposals for the prevention of repetition related to the origin and sources of the damaging process. Only when these requirements are fully met can damage analysis achieve its important aim.

Keywords: damage analysis; failure prevention; quality protection; structural failure.
