Abstract: Increase of strength leads in general to material thickness reduction in structures. Besides improved design methods not only tighter geometrical tolerances and better fabrication methods are needed, but a more accurate evaluation of material properties is necessary. According to different requirements varying testing methods have to be applied. All examinations, however, can be categorized for each particular specification to the steps standard test or condition, further to limit resp. to adapted testing or condition. As the final step, examination of the actual piece itself or of the true condition follows. General information decreases, specific characterization for a defined use (and cost) increases along the steps mentioned.
