Abstract: The objective of this study is to identify the profile of the school manager in the educational system. To reach this objective, an exploratory case study was carried out, the dimensions of which (training and action directives of the head/manager) were systematised in the two main instruments of data collection: (a) an interview with the head teacher of a school with contracted autonomy and (b) a questionnaire applied to the teachers of the same institution. We conclude that in a school with contracted autonomy, specific training and competencies are required in the pedagogical and technical dimensions of school management to carry out the functions of head/manager, as well as to develop a successful school with quality teaching. Managerial implications are also presented.
