Abstract: The Contract Expression Language (CEL) is an XML-based language designed to express contractual agreements between different parties for the purposes of capturing and communicating contractual information, and facilitating contract execution and enforcement by machines with respect to granted permissions, mandated obligations and stipulated prohibitions. This paper presents an overview of the CEL, and demonstrates its expressiveness and extensibility by illustrating its compliance to the business collaboration framework (BCF) for e-business transactions.

Keywords: contract expression language; CEL; XML; business collaborations; business collaboration framework; BCF; contracts; agreements; promises; e-business; electronic business.
