Abstract: A brief exposition is given of |Manufacturing Technology| from the viewpoint of a symbiotic relationship between |technology| and |manufacturing|. The successes and failures of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria are critically appraised, and the role of technology in these matters is highlighted. The constraints that militate against the growth of the manufacturing sector and thereby limit the sector|s output to a small part (currently about 7%) of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are analysed in detail, and solutions are proffered. Drawing on his experience in the teaching of Production Engineering (Manufacturing Technology) for several years to final-year undergraduate students in Mechanical Engineering, the author discusses the potential contributions of institutions of learning, at various levels, towards the acquisition, development and use of manufacturing technology in the developing economies of Africa.

Keywords: manufacturing technology; production engineering; Nigeria; manufacturing sector; primary schools; secondary schools; university education; Africa; developing countries; higher education.
