Abstract: The general problem of waste disposal into the environment is reviewed and leads into a discussion of the necessity for the new professional area of waste management to be fostered. This profession would oversee and direct the reduction of waste generation, develop recycling schemes and markets for the utilisation of materials presently wasted, and control the disposal to the environment of the remainder. The case for the initiative to be taken by industry itself is strongly argued, but the need for national government and international control is not ignored.
