Abstract: Environmental management by industry requires commitment from the top down in an organisation if it is to succeed. Using his own company, Union Carbide, as a basis, the author identifies a number of key steps in implementing a strategy of environmental management. By undergoing a continuing process of improvement internally and participating in the regulatory process, industry has the tools to succeed in this area.
