Abstract: The present knowledge of elements essential for life is summarised. Pollution of air, water and soil can modify the availability of elements essential to living matter. Because of narrow range of adequacy for most species this can result in different abnormalities. Among human activities which mobilise large amount of elements, a significant role is played by energy production and traffic.
