Abstract: Two of the key concepts of the modern era have been development and economic growth. From the early very close identification between the two has emerged the concept of human development, which includes economic growth but goes beyond it, More recently still, because of unambiguous evidence of serious damage to the global environment, the concept of sustainable development has also gained currency. By exploring the contribution of the environment to the economy and human welfare, the paper weaves together the notions of human and sustainable development to derive a new paradigm for the next century.

Keywords: economic development; economic growth; environment; human development; sustainable development; sustainability; environmental impact.
