Abstract: The paper presents a management framework to integrate market selection and competency development in the context of new product or service development. The integration mechanism suggested is the concept of the product or service platform. The paper defines approaches to market, platform, and competency development, and presents data from manufacturing, software, and services businesses to illustrate these concepts.
