Abstract: The focus of this paper is to propose a measurement method of gear engagement by means of two rotary encoders, which have ultra-high resolution of up to 0.35 μrad (0.072|| (arc second)). The authors have developed a single flank gear-testing machine with a pair of rotary encoders. The paper shortly describes the details of this testing machine and shows some measured examples of Transmission Error (TE) with sub-microradian resolution. Although there is substantial difficulty in measurement of TE with gear eccentricity, the developed measurement system can also detect TE with gear eccentricity to investigate not only the relation between the amounts of gear eccentricity and P-V values of TE, but also manufacturing error by experiment.
