Abstract: Ultra-wideband (UWB) systems are suitable for underlay communications. This paper reviews the coexistence between UWB and other communications systems that work either within the main band (3.1 GHz-10.6 GHz) or out of it. A brief description of the UWB technologies is given. Spectrum regulations around the world are described. The coexistence between the UWB and the UMTS system is investigated as a study case. Finally, detect and avoid (DAA) techniques are given. It is shown that a new UWB emission mask is needed to reduce as much as possible the impact of UWB upon other systems.

Keywords: ultra wideband; UWB communications; universal mobile telecommunications systems; UMTS; WiMAX; coexistence; detection; avoidance; DAA; regulations; multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing; MB-OFDM; UWB emission mask.
