Abstract: The Minister of the Department of Transport, Communications and Energy of the Swiss Confederation outlines first the legislative and cultural framework of the present telecommunications structure in Switzerland. He then describes recent developments and proposed new legislation. His government propose a greater role for private organizations; while the postal and telecommunications authorities will operate the public networks, private institutions will be allowed to operate value-added network (VAN) services. He describes also the progress being made in introducing integrated services digital networks (ISDN).
