Abstract: University-industry interaction in the United Kingdom was accelerated by government funding policies. Northern Ireland required a broader industrial base embodying newer technology, and its positive community environment strengthened through formal university efforts, represented by student projects, R&D, specialized industrial units, training, special research units, new companies and general services. Coordination of this work required recognition of the diversity of issues, problems and concerns which arise in technology transfer.

Keywords: technology transfer; industrial funding; community responsibility; market diversity; new company formation; access; university-industry relations; regional universities; higher education; UK; United Kingdom; Northern Ireland.
