Abstract: There is a shortfall or imbalance between the steady increase in the complexity of process-related technologies, and the much slower rate of increase in the sophistication of process control systems. This paper explores two avenues along which this imbalance can be attacked. The first would more aggressively exploit opportunities for incremental instrumental improvements, while the second suggests more fundamental changes to both structure and substance.

Keywords: control systems; control theory; process management; technology management.
