Abstract: The refractory industry faces two important problems: on the one hand the longevity of new materials, and on the other a sudden drop in demand. The depression in the world iron and steel industry has not resulted in a corresponding reduction in the number of refractory companies; the question is now one of survival. How has this situation arisen, and what can be done about it? This paper draws up guidelines based on the experience of the refractory industry, in order to design strategic plans for the future.
