Abstract: The author analyses official indicators of growth and productivity in the USA in the post-war period, and concludes that they may be subject to systematic biases which lead to underestimation of productivity performance in some sectors. He identifies three possible sources of mis-measurement of industry output and productivity, and estimates their possible effects in various sectors of the US economy.
