Abstract: The term |globalization| is often used to describe the process which companies must undergo in order to become internationally competitive. In this paper, the author argues that globalization is not simply a matter of selling a single product worldwide, nor a reflection of scale alone, nor simply a matter of achieving the structure of a conventional multinational corporation. Rather, he describes the process as a set of dynamics, or what might be called |rules of the game|. He shows what considerations must drive automobile manufacturers if they are to succeed in the global market-place.

Keywords: global marketplace; globalisation; automobile industry; competitiveness; extended enterprise; automotive manufacturers.
