Abstract: Technological development has an extremely important role in the future of broadcasting. HDTV in Europe and Japan and Advanced Television in the United States provide examples of developing broadcast technology. To these can be added EDTV and quasi-constant luminance signal processing. In the area of sound broadcasting, stereophonic broadcasting and the digitization of sound signals aim to improve sound transmission quality. Satellite broadcasting and fibre optics represent two novel transmission technologies. The development of technology is also obfuscating the boundary between broadcasting and telecommunications.
