Abstract: The recent structural changes in the iron and steel industries of Japan and West Germany are outlined and compared. In West Germany companies have been rebuilt by centering reconstruction on high technology. The Japanese industry has made remarkable progress since World War II. But for the Japanese industry to overcome international trade frictions, new management strategies will be required.
