Abstract: In the present work, a soft computing based methodology is proposed for finding out the optimum process parameters in multipass turning process. Neural networks, fuzzy sets and Genetic Algorithm (GA) have been used as soft computing constituents. Neural networks have been used for the prediction of surface finish and tool life for a particular set of process parameters. In view of the uncertainty, surface finish is predicted as a fuzzy number. Optimisation for various goals is carried out using real coded GA. A number of examples have been taken to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.
